I've been learning it for exactly one year. I'm more than half way through Rosetta Stone level 3, and I also look up a lot of things online and use Smart FM. I can speak it somewhat decently. I can read katakana and hiragana. I can only read about three to four dozen Kanji though. I'm really focusing more on learning to speak it and then write/read it later. I would consider myself intermediate level, even though I've been studying it for such a short time. I've been told by several native Japanese speakers that I'm pretty good, though I'm not really sure myself. I still get excited when I watch anime and can understand a whole sentence. That's not counting really short sentences though like "what do you mean?" "who are you?" etc. But I was proud of myself. The last episode of Death Note I watched, I could understand 5 sentences. There was one REALLY long one that I think I MIGHT have understood all of it. I heard a bunch of words I knew, some of which took me a moment to put together, and when I looked on the subtitles I recognized all the words. Of course, that didn't mean they were all in there so I had to rewind it a few times but they were just talking too quickly for me to catch it.
The whole reason I was looking for a Japanese radio station online was so I could practice listening. Plus, I have a HUGE, practically unhealthy obsession with foreign languages. Hence why I want to learn as many languages as I possibly can and become a translator.
